With Superman almost having returned to the theatres, the older movies are obviously on TV. Watching Superman I'm reminded again what a travesty the first film is - starting with Gene Hackman's immensly campy Luthor. He plays Luthor more like an annoying fly rather than an evil nemesis. And he has hair!!!! Added to the fact that Superman isn't the most intriguing superhero to begin with. Not much darkness there, and he's too perfect... I do like Michael Rosenbaum's Luthor though. He's quite menacing when he wants to be, though he can look a little like a rabbit at times. Can't wait to see Spacey's Luthor - should be a good blend of the slightly funny Hackman and sometimes too dark Rosenbaum.
ITV's F1 coverage gets worse and worse everyday... Blundell, Kravitz and Allen... Oh God, why can't we get decent commentators? And Steve Ryder who I liked to begin with... is just so bland. Plus all the Button pushing! *Barf* Why, why, why?
And then there's the incredibly one-sided world cup coverage. The World Cup isn't there like a Kurukshetra. Every other team is not incidental to England's campaign, and the tournament is not England's to win or lose. Gah, its nails-on-the-blackboard irritating.
Other Peeves - BIG Peeve - Ill Bureaucrats.
Being Broke.
Grrrr.
"Time is the guy at the amusement park who paints shirts with an airbrush. He sprays out the color in a fine mist until it's just lonely particles floating in the air, waiting to be plastered in place. And what comes of it all, the design on the shirt at the end of the day, ususally isn't much to see... We're the paint in the analogy. Time is what disperses us." --The Rule of Four

Avoidance, the Tower Bridge, Surrealism and other random musings
R. W. continues to evade and ignore. Avoidance techniques have been well and truly mastered - do all bureaucrats go to a special 'how to not pay attention' school? This is stupendously annoying - I am going to have to get irritable and teary to get any, that's right, attention. Demnading large sums of money for all my trouble should do it, then.
As a consequence I still have no idea when I'm going back home. And I'm so tempted to start quoting Cheers here its funny. ( And that ofcourse leads to that wonderful image of Joey sitting in a hotel room in London, missing NY. Hee. )
Spent a couple of days at Ks new flat ... its wonderful. The flat itself, the location, the view, its all there. Also met with K (but this is a different K, so lets call her K'). Went on an extra long walk from Canary Wharf to Tower Bridge, where I sat for a while and spoke to D. Gah, I miss Delhi. Then walked to the Millenium Bridge, and to the Tate Modern, which is next to the Globe. So wanted to see a play, but am totally and completely broke (which could be one of the motivating factors for my heretofore unprecedented long walk). The Tate was great - and there collection of surrealists was spectacular. They had many many Miros, and several Dalis including The Metamorphosis of Narcissus. Some of the stuff was really out there, though.
Oh, and they had Water Lily!!!! I stood there, looking at it, close enough to touch, thinking how he must have felt when he was painting it. Now that was surreal. Klimt was also there, though they had only one painting, and it was a portrait. Sigh. There were many Pollocks, which I couldn't look at for evaluating their potential in my drawing room.
So, for the random Musings part of the program.... I'm bored. And irritated. And bored. And in limbo. Sick of not knowing. Wanting to go home. Bored. Random Enough??

Sigh...
So Much for Alonso's mechanical failure.. grrrr........ he's getting very very irritating. And Brazil were very far from impressive in their game against Croatia, though it was funny how the media kept building them up to impossible heights and then wondered why they were disappointing. Now they're equally keen to suggest that Brazil will not win. Sigh.
Belated Happy Birthday Mummy! Realised I didn't put it in the one on the 9th, so I'm doing it now. Missed you very very much and love you ... see you soon!
I've got to walk up Constitution Hill before I leave Aber. Got to. Got to. Got to.

World Cup, Silverstone and other ruminations...
Race Weekend! I really hope MS puts Monaco behind him with a real dominating win at Silverstone. Way to shut British Press up for a while anyway. Hopefully Alonso will have a DNF, and God Forbid, we might actually have a fight for the title. Button's been praying for rain, and I must agree with him (euch! When did that happen?) - rain increases so very much the chances of a Ferrari victory... and if it wont rain in bloody Britain, where will it rain???
The biggest sporting event of the year is also going be GO! on Saturday. Brazil's my pick, but then anybody with half a brain would bet on them. I'm just concerned that the overwhelming favourite tag is going to be more of a curse and they're going to not win spectaculalrly... instead pull a France and depart in the first round. England's hopes IMO do depend on Rooney... but I don't think they'll pull it off thi year. Portugal are perennial underachievers as are Spain - I think if Brazil fail to step up, Germany, Italy or the Czechs (a good outside bet) will come to the partay!
There's an Isle of Wight festival!!! Which Coldplay is headlining - why don't ai find out about these things in time to actually bloody well buy the tickets!!!! Gah....
And double gah.

I'm a Ferrari 360 Modena!
You've got it all. Power, passion, precision, and style. You're sensuous, exotic, and temperamental. Sure, you're expensive and high-maintenance, but you're worth it.
"Take the Which Sports Car Are You? quiz.
Back to Blogging?
Just a one-line note to self: In a week or so I'll be back home! Its odd being in the weird kind of limbo that I will be in, with not having graduated here... but getting to work there, and wondering what to do next year... its all a mystery. Its like what Meredith says on Grey's Anatomy (love that, by the way - Mc Dreamy! Where can I order one?) When did we become adults? And how do we make it stop??

The truth is . . it's a code of old rubbish
In the wake of the copyright battle over the Da Vinci Code, and the forthcoming release of the film (interesting timing for the suit, no?) interest in such conspriacy has been greatly renewed. Now, I enjoyed the Da Vinci Code as much as then next person - it was a deeply entertaining romp through Western history. However, I am less inclined to believe every conspiracy that it suggests... though ofcourse I'd like believe in the odd one or two. :)
This Op-ed was brilliant - sarcastic, funny, yet not entirely disparaging.

Steve's Resume
Steve's Resume
Not bad huh? Now, if only he could bottle that "vision thing" he talks about... :D And I'll be first in line to buy. Lets see what he does with Disney though. And I can't believe he wont try to influence the way things work there, somehow.

Miss You...
Kanu.
I miss you.
Wherever you are, I hope you're happy.
Its time again I railed at God in a typically selfish way to ask, "why you"?? Why my best friend? But then I know that you made your peace with it. And that I could never lose you, because you live on in all of us. As cheesy as that may sound.
To you. Forever young. Forever the girl who taught me so much.

Obstacle Course
Life resembles nothing so much as an obstacle course sometimes. You really do have to be careful of what you wish for, just in case you get it. All I wanted one year ago was to get a chance to do my Master's. Its besides the point I hoped it would be at Oxford or Columbia, but I did get (more or less) what I desired. And once I got here, it hasn't been the best ride. What is it in us that makes us idealize our dreams? I guess that's why they're called dreams. Aberystwyth hasn't exactly been the place I envisaged it to be. And to top everything I've spoiled things. Bigtime. The bitterest (is that even a word?) pill to swallow is that it'll be no one's fault but my own if what remained of my dream collapses because I was too stupid to do things the way they're supposed to be done.
Its also true that I've started thinking beyond studying. Now all I want is a good-ish job, friends and the 'good life'. I think that's a result of watching way too many sitcoms. But the whole comfort thing of having a group of people to have coffee with, who share things with you and aren't afraid to tell you what they really think about anything... while you get satisfaction in working at a place that you know will take you somewhere better. Is that too much to ask for?
I'm not doing the best job of telling myself what it is that I want. This doesn't make too much sense. I suppose the problem is also that I haven't yet found my niche. What's my passion? I want to work in an industry that I care deeply about and I'm good at. But... what is it that I'm that good at? That passionate about??? I have no idea... and its high time I found out. There isn't that much time left to experiment anymore...

Months, years...
Travelled a long way since my last blog - both literally and figuratively. In one sense this is a dream, I'm on a scholarship to possibly the best school of international politics in the UK, and I'm living on my own... on my own terms, by my own rules. And yet, home seems like such a warm, welcoming beacon.
Its obviously more difficult because its the first time I'm away. The initial months were very hard, but its not so bad now. I quite enjoy the independence, the feeling of making my own choices... not that I didn't have the freedom in Delhi, but things are different when you live with your parents.
I'm still torn - I don't know whether this is something I could - that I want to - get used to, or whether I want to live at home until the M word. Its certainly addictive, not having to worry about whether we got water today, or whether the electricity is going to result in sleepless nights on days when the temperature is 40 degrees celcius, or higher. But is the lure just of living in a western developed society, with an aggressively capitalist structure? Or is it the "coming of age" joy of living alone?

The Disappearance of News
As a journalism graduate, I'm appalled at the state of news channels in India today. On 15th August, Independence day, news channel run a story of some washed up actor, now a politician's, car crash. This is breaking news.
What disgusts me most is not just that this was apparently the most important news story around on a day when there were blasts in Srinagar and it was the anniversary of our Independance, but also the way in which news crews reported the incident. Within a few hours there were pictures of the crash, the people inside it and the rescue workers. I can now truly understand the absolute reulsion with which the media is sometimes treated. To behave like vultures, come and scavenge when someone has died and others are in critical conditions... there were cameras inside the hospital ward as well.
I'm absolutely completely horrified by the insensitivity, lack of ethics and love for the salacious of the media today.

I'm not a very good self-styled Herodotus, but I've decided to put down as much as I can as frequently as I can. Running pretty blank today though, since I've just found out that I can't take Critical Security Studies in College. So - History with Peter Jackson or Postcolonial Politics with Rita Abrahamsen or Strategic thinkers on War? Difficult choice....

ha-HA
Ha bloody Ha... so much for my very utopian hope to stop talking to myself ... here I am posting in my blog more than a month after I created it.
I'm also still unsure about what exactly to put down in here...

My First Blog
A bit of a late entrant to the whole blogging scene... i'm not even really sure of what I want to write about, but I talk to myself enough and I figure this will help me cut down on that!
